'Waterproofing' and 'damp-proofing' are frequently used as if they mean the same thing, but they describe materials engineered for genuinely different conditions, and the distinction has real consequences for a below-ground structure. Damp-proofing is designed to resist moisture and soil dampness without hydrostatic pressure behind it — think of it as resisting moisture vapour and light contact, not standing or pressurised water.
Waterproofing, by contrast, is engineered to resist actual hydrostatic pressure — water actively pushing against a surface, as you'd get below the water table, in a basement with poor drainage, or inside a water tank. A damp-proof coating used where a genuine waterproofing system was needed will typically fail once groundwater rises high enough to exert real pressure, even though it looked adequate during a dry-season inspection.
The confusion usually surfaces on basements and retaining walls where the water table's behaviour isn't obvious from the surface. A site that looks dry for most of the year can have a seasonally high water table during the long rains that puts real hydrostatic pressure on a below-grade wall for months at a time — at which point a damp-proof coating specified based on a dry-season site visit simply isn't rated for the job it's being asked to do.
Getting a proper site and groundwater assessment before specifying a system — rather than defaulting to whichever product is cheapest or most familiar — is the difference between a structure that stays dry through its first serious rainy season and one that needs a costly retrofit within a year or two of handover.
