- Surface receiving a coating or membrane, such as concrete, screed, masonry or metal.
- Surface preparation
- Removal of dust, laitance, oil, weak material and contamination to obtain a sound surface.
- Primer
- Preparatory material used where specified to improve adhesion or regulate absorption.
- SSD (saturated surface dry)
- Mineral substrate is saturated internally but has no standing surface water; only use this condition when the product TDS requires it.
- Hydrostatic pressure
- Pressure exerted by water on a structure or waterproofing system.
- Positive-side waterproofing
- Applied on the side from which water approaches the structure.
- Negative-side waterproofing
- Applied on the opposite side, where water pressure may challenge adhesion.
- Wet-film thickness (WFT)
- Coating thickness immediately after application.
- Dry-film thickness (DFT)
- Coating thickness after drying/curing.
- Crack bridging
- Ability of a membrane to span a crack within a stated movement limit.
- Pot life
- Usable time after components are mixed.
- Recoat interval
- Allowed time before applying the next layer.
- Curing
- Process that lets a cementitious or resin material develop its properties.
- Lap/overlap
- Overlapping area between adjacent sheet membranes.
- Termination
- Detail where a membrane ends and is sealed to adjoining construction.
- Waterstop
- Profile or strip used to block water through a concrete joint.
- Coverage rate
- Quantity of product required per unit area at a specified thickness.
- Capillary action
- Movement of moisture through small pores in porous materials.
- Rising damp
- Moisture moving upward through masonry from the ground; confirm the cause before choosing a treatment.
- Ponding water
- Water remaining on a surface instead of draining.
- Hydrophilic waterstop
- Material that swells when exposed to water.
- Injection packer
- Fitting installed in a hole/crack to inject repair resin under controlled pressure.
A quality-control sequence for any waterproofing job
Adapt it to the system you are installing. The product data sheet always decides the details.
- 1Inspect and diagnose the source of water; distinguish leaks, rising damp, condensation, drainage failure and cracks.
- 2Check substrate strength, moisture and contamination; repair voids and weak concrete.
- 3Select a complete compatible system, including joints, corners, penetrations, drainage and protection.
- 4Apply primer, membrane/coating and reinforcement only as specified in the product/system TDS.
- 5Record product batch, mixing ratio, coverage, layer thickness, weather and curing conditions.
- 6Inspect details and seams before covering the work; conduct a suitable water test only where the system and project specification permit.
- 7Protect the system from puncture, UV, traffic, backfill or chemicals as required.
