One of the most expensive mistakes in damp remediation is treating the wrong problem correctly. All three major types of damp — rising, penetrating, and condensation — can leave a stained, damp-feeling patch of wall, which is exactly why so many cases get misdiagnosed and 'fixed' with the wrong product.
Rising damp travels upward from the ground through capillary action and is present all year round, usually confined to the lower portion of a ground-floor wall. Penetrating damp comes from the outside in — a crack in render, a failed roof flashing, a blocked gutter overflowing against a wall — and tends to appear after heavy rain, in a specific spot that maps to the defect letting water in, and can occur at any height. Condensation forms when warm, moist indoor air meets a cold surface, typically around windows, in poorly ventilated bathrooms, or on external walls with weak thermal insulation, and gets noticeably worse in cold, poorly ventilated conditions.
The practical test is simple: does the damp patch correspond to a visible external defect (penetrating), does it sit low on the wall and persist regardless of weather (rising), or does it come with condensation on glass, a musty smell, and mould in corners with poor airflow (condensation)? Get this wrong and you can end up installing an expensive chemical DPC to treat what was actually a blocked gutter — the damp will return within a season because the actual source was never addressed.
A proper survey before any treatment starts should identify the specific defect causing the moisture, not just confirm that moisture is present. That diagnostic step is the single highest-value part of any damp-proofing job, because it determines whether you need a DPC injection, a render repair, better ventilation, or simply clearing a downpipe.
