Bituminous waterproofing has been a construction staple for decades, and for good reason — it's durable, cost-effective, and highly resistant to water. But 'bituminous' actually covers three quite different products, and the installation method changes the risk profile completely. Torch-applied membranes are heated with an open flame and bonded to the substrate; self-adhesive membranes use a factory-applied sticky backing instead; liquid bituminous coatings are simply brushed or sprayed on cold.
Torch-on membranes give a strong, monolithic bond when done correctly, but the open-flame application demands genuine skill and fire safety discipline — an under-heated seam won't bond, an over-heated one can burn through the membrane, and either mistake only shows up as a leak months later. Self-adhesive membranes remove the flame risk and are considerably easier to install consistently, though the adhesive layer can lose its grip over time, particularly under sustained heat exposure.
Liquid bituminous coatings are the simplest of the three and useful for smaller repair areas or as a damp-proofing layer, but they generally can't match the thickness and puncture resistance of a proper sheet system on a high-traffic or heavily trafficked roof. Across all three, UV exposure is the long-term enemy — bitumen becomes brittle with age and sun exposure, so any bituminous system left permanently exposed benefits from a reflective or protective topcoat to extend its working life well beyond the typical unprotected lifespan.
